Melatonin is a chemical produced in our brain that helps regulate the sleep-wake cycle. It also has powerful anti-oxidant properties and lately has been discovered to interact positively with the immune system. A typical dose is between 0.3 - 3 mg at bedtime. I take 3 mg before bedtime and it does help me fall asleep. The only side effect I can note is an occasional vivid dream, a commonly reported occurrence. Medically, there do not seem to be notable adverse effects from taking this supplement.

Although melatonin is a naturally occuring chemical in the brain that helps us sleep, some people don't make enough, I am one of them, so I take this. It helps me fall asleep much faster and sleep more soundly, it reallly works.
