American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) is a close relation to Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng). Native American Indians knew of the herb for centuries and used it to treat a wide variety of ailments. It was discovered by Europeans in the early 1700’s and a thriving trade in American ginseng began not to long after that.
American ginseng is considered an adaptogen, meaning it will help the body restore natural balance and health without any unwanted side effects. Scientists have discovered that the active ingredients in ginseng are saponin triterpenoid glycosides, more commonly known as ginsenocides. American ginseng contains almost 30 ginsenocides. It differs from Korean ginseng in its high content of ginsenocide Rb1 known for its sedative effects on the central nervous system.
