Memory, known as “Smriti” in ancient Ayurvedic Science, is basically a cognitive process of the mind. We may say that experience modifies the structure of the mind, i.e., through the persistence of their modifications; the past experiences nfluence present behavior and mental process. Some part of the structure of the mind, innately determined or inherited and all that is added to it or changed in it by the course of experience is usually and conveniently included under the term memory. All those conditions that affect the mind, in turn, affect the memory. Memory loss is very common in this present era due to stressful life conditions and day to day worries and hurries.
There are three humors (Doshas) of mind like three humors of the body:
· Satva – Most healthy and balanced state of mind
· Rajas – Excited state of mind
· Tamas – Depressed state of mind
The different conditions that affect the memory are conditions of mind due to increase in Rajas and Tamas doshas (humors) of mind [like biological humors of the body like the – Vata (air), Pitta (fire) and Kapha (water)].
The different psychological factors due to these doshas (humors) are greed, desire, anger, infatuation, envy, pride, arrogance, grief, anxiety, worry, fear and jealously ultimately affect the mind and memory.
Simply, these psychological factors can be defined as abnormal states of mind characterized by:
Impairment of general mental functions like perception and motor control in the absence of organic problems, mind control, hypothetical self discussion, critical analysis based on observations and different aspects of mind like decision, memory, orientation and responsiveness, conduct, psychomotor activity etc.
Weak psyche or psychic energy
The involvement of both somatic and mental doshas viz. Vata (air), Pitta (fire) and Kapha (water) and Rajas and Tamas combined or only the doshas of mind.
The relation of somatic and mind doshas (humors)are:
Vata (air) is Rajas (excited state of mind) predominant dosha (humor)
Kapha (water) is Tamas (depressed state of mind) predominant dosha (humor)
Pitta (fire) is Satva (healthy state of mind) predominant dosha (humor)
