The American Heart Association has endorsed omega-3 fatty acids as good for the heart. Through the years, hundreds of studies have established that diets high in omega-3 fatty acids result in a decrease in the risk of heart attack, stroke and abnormal heart rhythms. Two clinical studies concluded that including omega-3 rich foods or supplements in the diet could prevent sudden death from abnormal heart rhythms. Omega-3 fatty acids decrease the LDL (“bad”) cholesterol in your blood while increasing the HDL (“good”) cholesterol. They also protect the heart by preventing blood clots and keeping other fats from injuring arterial walls.
