Stopped Traveler's Diarrhea/Cramps
by Ivy S.
On the last day of a five day trip to Brazil with my husband, I came down with severe stomach cramps and diarrhea. By the time we got off the plane in the US and got to our car, I was miserable and went straight to my doctor's office. He ordered antibiotics and merely felt I had picked up some sort of bug or virus while out of the country. However, after a full week on the prescription, I was still experiencing a fever, frequent and copious diarrhea attacks, nausea and cramps. I tried OTC products, as well ,and got no relief. While almost housebound by the "Brazilian Bug" as we referred to it, my mother-in-law mentioned my trying the herb "St. Benedict's Thistle" which, after checking a herbal dictionary, turned out to be another name for "Blessed Thistle". She noted that her own grandmother had called it "spotted thistle" and that the herb was an old fashioned, yet very effective treatment for intestinal parasites, which used to be quite common in those days. While checking our herbal volume, we found that Blessed Thistle was listed as having been proven in lab studies to be "anti-microbial", and a tonic to the digestive system. Thinking that I might have indeed picked up some form of "tourista", or traveler's diarrhea, as it is often called, from swimming or bathing in Brazilian lakes or natural waters away from our hotel, I decided to try the herb Blessed Thistle, along with another anti-parasitic herb, oil of oregano.
Within just the first 48 hours, I noticed a lessening in the severe cramps and diarrhea, and by weeks end on the herbal capsules, I had no further symptoms and my temperature was once again normal, as well. Since then, I always carry bottles of both Blessed Thistle capsules and oil of oregano. whenever we go out of the country. At times when it's not allowed on the plane, I immediately find a local source where we are traveling to make sure I always have the herbs available in case of diarrhea.
Blessed Thistle is also said to be an effective anti-inflammatory and is sometimes used to improve memory. My own experience proved to me that it's effectiveness is superb in treating diarrhea from some form of intestinal invasion not often seen in our country and not treatable by standard antibiotic therapy. I prefer the Nature's Herbs brand of Blessed Thistle as their product is superior in that the herb is organic, being grown completely without chemical pesticides or fertilizers.
If you have a sudden attack of diarrhea after being in areas with poor sanitation or just natural lake or river waters, and it does not respond to antibiotics or traditional treatments, you may have picked up either intestinal microbes or parasites. If so, please remember Blessed Thistle as an alternative treatment that may well take care of the problem when nothing else seems to work.
