Historically ginger has been used as a digestive aid. A 1999 study conducted in Germany showed ginger increased digestive movement through the stomach and duodenum. In addition, ginger is thought to fight harmful bacteria (like E. coli and streptococcus) without killing beneficial bacteria. Ginger also can work against ulcers caused by Heliobacter pylori.
The anti-inflammatory properties of ginger have been shown to reduce hip and knee pain in some osteoarthritis patients.
For many years, ginger has been suggested as an aid to relieve or prevent nausea and vomiting related to pregnancy. A 1998 report reviewed 10 clinical studies and confirmed this relationship. However, pregnant women should consult with their physician before using ginger. Taking 500 mg of ginger two or three times a day may also prove helpful in reducing motion sickness.
