Gotu kola is a perennial herb found in Africa, India, China and other parts of southeast Asia. A member of the parsley family, gotu kola has been part of Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine for hundreds of years. Despite its familiar sounding name, gotu kola contains no cola or caffeine but it is a rich source of vitamin K.
The active compound in gotu kola is triterpenoids. In general, gotu kola is prized for its perceived calming effect and support of the central nervous system as well as positive effects on circulation. Gotu kola is known to enhance brain and peripheral circulation. Some people believe it may improve memory. Gotu kola appears to relax the central nervous system resulting in its calming effect. At the same time it stimulates the brain resulting in improved concentration.
