May reduce risks of congestive heart failure
by Ivy S.
My mother was hospitalized twice last year for congestive heart failure, and after coming home the last time, she was concerned with the possibility of having a more serious bout again in the future. Preferring natural treatments or supplements, we sat down together and searched several herbal books and online sites, looking for any herbs that might prevent the problem, or at least lessen her chances of succumbing to cardiovascular disease related to fluid gathering around the heart and lungs.
Hawthorn Berries were listed as having been studied and found to be effective for control and prevention of many problems, including irregular heartbeats, hypertension, cholesterol control, and most of all, the early stages of congestive heart failure. The information we found in the book mentioned hawthorn berries' ability to improve heart contractions and reduce fluid build-up and retention. My mother was on several prescriptions, so we were particularly pleased to see that they also have no known drug interactions, so were a good choice for her.
She has been taking the Puritan's Pride 565 mg. Hawthorn Berries Capsules since last fall and has not had another occurrence of fluids gathering around her heart, so we believe the product does work well as a preventative. She prefers the Puritan's Pride brand, as she respects their high quality standards, reasonable prices, and she can easily replenish her supply when she purchases her regular vitamin and herb supplies from the same maker.
Hawthorn is also known as "May Day Flowers" and it's berries can be made into marmalades for table use, and it's health benefits are many. Used by the American Indians to treat stomach problems and diarrhea, the berries later became popular for their efficacy in both treating and preventing cardiovascular disease. Reported to be effective to relax blood vessels, regulate heartbeat, and reduce cholesterol levels, the herb and it's berries show many benefits to the entire circulatory system. I have even taken the capsules myself as a mild treatment for insomnia and as an adjunct therapy for reducing blood pressure or easing fluid retention in the lower extremities.
